Born in 1730, he began his apprenticeship in the workshop of his father, already active at the court of Savoy, and married the daughter of the sculptor Francesco Ladatte, Rosalia. At the age of nineteen, he began working at the Reggia di Venaria as a landscape painter. He worked at the court of Savoy from 1749 to 1794. In 1774 he was appointed professor at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Turin and "court painter" by the King of Sardinia Victor Amadeus III. A fashionable painter of his time, he created, like his father, idealized landscapes of "woods" with Arcadian accents, in accordance with the tastes of the patrons of the time, mainly aristocrats, court dignitaries and princes belonging to the royal family of Savoy. A real school formed around him, which was joined by his son Angelo Antonio who, following the fame of the family, also worked at the court of Savoy. Many of his works are in private collections and art galleries, still others can be seen in noble residences - such as Palazzo Barolo and Palazzo Chiablese - at the Accorsi - Ometto Museum of Decorative Arts, in some royal palaces of Savoy such as the Villa d'Agliè and at the Civic Museum of the city of Agliè. Two works attributed to the Cignaroli family are exhibited at the Grand Hotel Sitea in Turin. Abroad, some of his works can be seen in the canton of Ticino, at the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso.
