"Great Dogon Maternity Mali "
Beautiful large Dogon maternity, height 70 cm, patina of use a little dry, traces of blows and wear. She is seated on a stool supported by small figures (a throne) proudly carrying her child, there was a lot of infant mortality, the mother therefore avoids getting too attached in the early days, hence this detached air that we see in African maternities, no tenderness or glances towards the baby, like our virgins and child. Note the beautiful cubist forms, the baby has ties to the arms and legs, undoubtedly a symbolic value to avoid certain diseases such as polio. These altar statues have the role of guaranteeing fertility and protecting women during pregnancy and childbirth. From a Norman succession.
