"Jean François Canepa: The Quays"
Jean François Canepa (1894-1981) was a Marseille painter and member of the Peano group, a friendly gathering of artists from the old port who had their studios on the Quai de Riveneuve, in the old warehouses. He was a student of the Phocaean painters Moutte and Guindon, and became a professor at the Beaux-Arts in Marseille in 1938. He became known in Paris by participating in the decoration of the Apollo and the Folies Bergères. His clear style, inspired by Cubism, is easily recognizable. This watercolor in shades of brown and beige shows with simplicity and talent, his ability to transcribe the serenity of a quay, certainly not far from his studio. It is originally framed, with its small label from a framer in the old town.
