Two techniques used for this Shahsavan: soumak* in the center (originally, front of the bag) and kilims with bands (originally, back of the bag).
*Soumak: wrapped weft weaving technique (embroidery), called in Iran suzan, suzani meaning 'embroidered with a needle'. Beautiful composition for this Shahsavan with discreet and subtle colors. It is assumed that zoomorphic cats, arching their backs, are represented as well as more stylized cat heads.
SHAHSAVAN (those who love the Shah)Shahsavan: title granted by Shah Abbas the Great (1588-1629), Safavid ruler, in opposition to the Qizilbashs (red heads). The Qizilbashs: confederation formed by several Turkic groups of Turkmen origin were at the origin of the Safavid dynasty founded in 1501 by Shah Ishmael (Shiite). The greedy and corrupt Qizilbashs wanted to gain power. For this reason, Shah Abbas made an appeal to all ethnic groups who wished to do so, in order to form a confederation opposing the Qizilbashs. The Shahsavan confederation was born. It consisted of a large number of Qizilbashs who had remained loyal to Shah Abbas, Persian-speaking tribes (Tajik: not Turkish) as well as Kurds. In exchange for their loyalty, the Safavid rulers granted privileges to the shahsavans. Safavid: dynasty founded in 1501 by Shah Ishmael (Shiite) and which ended in 1732.
