This vintage Chinese stoneware figure depicts a court official dressed in formal robes, modelled in the round and finished with a rich oxblood glaze. In his right hand, he holds a traditional zheshan (折扇), a folded fan associated with scholars and refined social status. In his left hand, he carries a scroll, a symbol of knowledge, governance, and official authority. Together, these attributes identify the figure as a learned and high-ranking official, likely referencing ideals of Confucian virtue.
The flowing robe is accented in pale yellow and green oxide, with detailing to the sleeves, belt, and hem. The figure’s facial features are sharply modelled, and the hairstyle, beard, and cap are clearly defined. The glaze is glossy and thick, typical of pieces from the Shiwan Pottery Factory during the post-1949 collective era.
The underside bears the three-part impressed mark used by the Shiwan Pottery Factory (石湾制陶厂), including:
- Model number 44
- Temple lion emblem
- Square seal with the Chinese characters 石湾制陶厂 (Shiwan Pottery Factory)
This marking confirms the piece was produced during the mid-20th century collective production period. Larger and more elaborate examples such as this were often based on models by leading Shiwan sculptors like Pan Yushu and Liu Zeiman. The piece’s size and crisp moulding suggest a high level of workshop skill and strong quality control typical of that era.
Historical Background
The Shiwan kilns, located in Foshan, Guangdong Province, have a long and distinguished tradition of ceramic figure modelling. Following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Shiwan’s pottery workshops were reorganised into state-run collectives. The newly established Shiwan Pottery Factory continued to produce sculptural ceramics based on designs by established masters. These works are now highly regarded for their bold forms, vibrant glazes, and cultural symbolism.
