Double-sided engraved brass hinged proportion compass signed ‘Le Maire fils à Paris’, the signature of Pierre II Le Maire. He was the son of Pierre I Le Maire, active around 1668, King's engineer located in Paris, quai de l'Horloge du Palais and the nephew of Jacques Le Maire, member of the Société des Arts.
