Born on March 17, 1883 in Neuchâtel, Olsommer trained at the Beaux-Arts in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Munich and Geneva between 1901 and 1905. He married Veska Moneva in 1907, whom he painted very often, and with whom he traveled in the Balkans and Italy. Olsommer settled in 1912 in Valais, in Veyras, above Sierre. After devoting himself entirely to Art Nouveau, he turned to a deeply religious symbolism, with characters embodying various aspects of faith and devotion as his subject. His work also includes Valais landscapes and paintings of traditional costumes. He died on June 3, 1966, in Sierre. The Olsommer Museum, housed in his former home and studio, was inaugurated in 1991 (according to the entry in the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland).
