Alexis Joseph Mazerolle enjoyed great renown in his era due to the quality of his work, which earned him many prestigious commissions and made him a highly sought-after painter among collectors and art enthusiasts. This interesting painting, signed in the lower left by Alexis Joseph Mazerolle, depicts a grape harvest scene and offers a realistic vision of rural life in the mid-19th century.

Biography:


Alexis-Joseph Mazerolle (1826-1889), born and deceased in Paris, is a renowned French painter. After entering the Beaux-Arts in 1843, he distinguished himself with his tapestry designs and decorative art. Awarded several medals at the Salon from 1847 onwards, he began a prolific career as a decorator in the 1860s, receiving commissions from prestigious institutions such as the Conservatoire, the Théâtre de Vaudeville, the Monnaie de Bruxelles, the Opéra Garnier, and the Comédie Française. He also created works for private patrons, such as the Duke of Aumale and the singer Rosine Stoltz.

1857: Chilperic and Fredegund before the Corpse of Galswintha, 3rd class medal at the Salon.

1857: The Sleepers, 3rd class medal at the Salon.

1858: Vase of Flowers, set of four paintings for the Duke of Aumale's hotel, Chantilly, Musée Condé.

1859: Opium, Rouen, Musée des Beaux-Arts.

1859: Nero and Locusta Testing Poisons on a Slave, 3rd class medal at the Salon. Sketch preserved at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lille.

1859: Quiqui Charlotte, Compiègne, Château de Compiègne.

1861: Eponine Imploring the Mercy of the Gaul Sabinus, Roubaix, La Piscine, on deposit at the Musée du Louvre. 3rd class medal at the Salon.

1876 and 1888: Tapestry after The Fairy Goddaughter, Saint Petersburg, Museum of Heritage. This tapestry was shown at the 1889 World's Fair.

1882: Venus Marine, Fédération Nationale André Maginot.

1887: Psyche at the Source, Buenos Aires, Musée des Beaux-Arts.

1870: Love and Psyche, ceiling.

Circa 1870: Wine and Fruit, Hunting and Fishing, Pastry and Ice Cream, Tea and Coffee, tapestries for the Rotunda of the Opéra Garnier's Glacier.

1879: France Crowning Molière, Corneille and Racine, ceiling of the Comédie Française, destroyed in a fire in 1900. A preparatory gouache is preserved.
