Our work, drawing on the Symbolist vein, depicts a young, red-haired woman, half-naked, her gaze immersed in melancholic meditation. The model, appearing to emerge from a bath in the great outdoors, is surrounded by a vaporous, ethereal atmosphere.
Eugène CHAFFANEL (1848 Nancy - 1929)
A portrait, landscape, and genre painter, Chaffanel trained in Gérome's studio.
He exhibited regularly at the Salon de la Société Nationale from 1897 to 1934. He moved to New York in 1887, eventually returning to France.
Early in his career, the artist was close to the Pre-Raphaelites, particularly the English painter George Price Boyce, who specialized in watercolor landscapes. He was also influenced by Symbolism, drawing inspiration from the works of Gaston Bussière.
An established portrait and landscape artist renowned for his nighttime views of the Marne, he also left us scenes of bourgeois life in cafés and gardens, rural scenes, and views of the Mediterranean coast.
