Jacques Roch (1934-2015) was born in Lyon, France. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he became known in the 1960s thanks to his rebellious comic strips that fueled Parisian underground newspapers. In 1979, he moved to New York and devoted himself to painting. The intensity of urban life and graffiti culture overwhelmed him, and he responded by creating a universe of line-drawn characters, playing on their inner psychological tensions. This is how Jacques Roch exhibited for the first time in New York in 1983, curated by Cathy Goncharov. Exhibitions followed in the East Village. In 1990, Exit Art organized a retrospective exhibition of his ten years of work.
