Jean - Simon Deverberie - Rare Directory (1795-1799) Period Mantel Clock “ Joséphine ”

An exceptionally rare French mantel clock titled “Joséphine”, dating from the French Directory period (circa 1795–1799); a celebrated model by Jean-Simon Deverberie (1764–1824). Deverberie was one of the foremost Parisian bronziers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, renowned for his refined craftsmanship and imaginative compositions. The clock is superbly executed in patinated and gilt bronze.

The central figure of this poetic piece is a finely sculpted representation of the young Joséphine de Beauharnais, the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. She is depicted seated gracefully within a secluded bower, perched upon a stone plinth. To her side rests a delicate birdcage, while in her left hand she tenderly holds a shell, feeding fledglings nestled in a small nest atop a classical tripod. The intimate tableau is framed by two flanking trees, their patinated bronze foliage adorned with gilded fruit, arching protectively over the scene.

The arched case is bordered by an elegantly slender frame with a recessed frieze of laurel leaves, surmounted by exquisitely chiselled drapery in gilt bronze, rendered with remarkable realism. On either side of the dial, finely cast bas-reliefs depict classical scenes: two young women reclining on a chaise longue, accompanied by a winged putto, all set before a classical vase brimming with foliage. The sides of the case are adorned with simulated fabric panels in a rich patina, embellished with palmette motifs.

The clock rests on four finely cast ormolu feet shaped as acanthus leaves, lending the piece a sense of balance and refined poise. At its centre lies a dial with Roman numerals, encircled by an engraved lunette and fitted with blued steel hands in the Breguet style. The eight-day movement, in perfect working condition, features a wire suspension pendulum, and is driven by twin barrels. Regulated by a count wheel, it strikes the hours and half-hours upon its bell.

When seeing this unique clock, it immediately conveys that it has been made with a great deal of care, with its harmonious design, skillfully worked details and lavish decoration. It is clearly from the hands of a top bronzier like Deverberie. This Directory period mantel clock “Joséphine” is an exquisite and rare collector’s object.

The clock is offered complete with its pendulum, key, and bell. It displays exceptional quality and is preserved in a remarkable state, retaining its original mercury gilding.
