"Salmon Silk Moire Dinner Dress With Large Leg-of-mutton Sleeves - France Circa 1835"
Circa 1830-1835France Louis-Philippe periodSalmon-pink silk moiré dinner dress with large leg-of-mutton sleeves tightened on the forearms, among the most extravagant examples of the Romantic period. Fitted bodice closes at the neckline with brass hooks at the back and flat crossed pleats at the front highlighting the chest. Round skirt set with flat pleats at the front and barrel pleats at the back creating a rounded silhouette. The bodice is lined with a striped cotton fabric. The eccentrically voluminous sleeves would have received feather pads to maintain their volume. Wide waist belt that would have been embellished with a belt or a wide silk ribbon as an accessory. The skirt was not lined in this model. A precious testimony, this dress has many fragilities of the silk with small cuts and micro rust stains. This is a model very rarely listed by museums because this fashion for sleeves with unusual volumes was very short-lived. Average condition. Priced accordingly. Not wearable, for display only.
