Object description :

"Antique Polychrome Wooden Lamb Of God – 18th Century Altar Piece – 31.5 Cm High"
Magnificent antique wooden carving, probably oak, depicting in detail the Lamb of God carrying the flag. Finely carved with many details, this work probably dates from the 18th century. It was probably part of a larger wooden altar. Its exact history is unknown, but we acquired this piece in northern France. A superb piece to enrich your collection. I particularly appreciate certain details, such as those on the front of the lamb and above the flag. The lamb's head, worn by touch over time, has lost its detail – a nice indication of its age. Traces of the original polychromy can still be seen. The carving appears to be made from a single piece of wood, except for the flagpole, which was added separately.

Approximate Dimensions:
Height: 31.5 cm (12.4 inches)
Width: 18.3 cm (7.2 inches)
Depth: 9 cm (3.5 inches)

Significance of the sculpture: The Lamb of God is a title given to Jesus, mentioned in the Gospel according to Saint John. It is found notably in John 1:29, when John the Baptist sees Jesus and exclaims: “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” This symbol is central to Christian theology, where Jesus is seen as the sacrificial lamb, fully obedient to the divine will, who sacrifices himself for humanity. This image is also found in the Book of Revelation, where a resurrected lion-like lamb brings victory after being slain. The Lamb of God is also associated with Passover (the Paschal lamb) and the idea of God as a shepherd guiding his sheep, as illustrated in Psalm 23. This symbol is omnipresent in Christian prayers and remains fundamental to the message of the Christian faith.
