Large oil on canvas portrait depicting General Auguste Osmont (1818-1890) in ceremonial uniform, signed lower left PA Jeanniot (1826-1892) and dated 1868, in its wooden and gilded stucco frame. Auguste Osmont entered the Saint Cyr school in 1836, he participated in the conquest of Algeria, the Crimean War, that of Mexico. of which he was Minister of War under the reign of Maximilian of Habsburg Lorraine then returned to France. He participated in the war of 70 against Germany. Then returned to Algeria as governor of the province of Oran then that of Algiers. He left active service in 1883, he was at that time Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor. He is one of the greatest warriors of King Louis Philippe but especially of Emperor Napoleon III. Pierre Alexandre Jeanniot is a French artist, painter of genre, portraits, landscapes who exhibited at the Paris Salon for more than thirty years (1852-1873) building a great reputation among the high society of the time. Many of his works are kept in French and international museums.
