Object description :

"Painted Bark, Kwoma Ethnic Group, Papua New Guinea, Traditional Art, Oceanic Art, Tribal Art"
Particularly aesthetic painted bark, collected in the Washkuk hills area in Papua New Guinea. These paintings on sago palm bark decorate the inner faces of roofs as well as the pediments of ceremonial houses and represent in an abstract or figurative way the ancestors or beliefs of the clans. Assembled together, they thus cover the ceilings of these large prestigious huts. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York presents in its permanent collection the complete reconstruction of a hut roof decorated with painted bark of this type... The designs here evoke taro leaves. Pieces of sago palm bark and natural pigments. Traces of use. Approx. 118 x 40 cm / €250 including shipping.
