Georges-Jean Lemare, also known as Georges Le Mare, is a French orientalist painter born on 29 April 1866 in Coutances (Manche) and died on 27 March 1942 in Tunis. Initially destined for a military career, he moved to Tunisia in 1890 at the age of 24, where he resided until his death.
His work is part of the Orientalist movement, with a predilection for scenes of everyday life in Tunisia, including markets, souks and urban landscapes. It follows the tradition of painters such as Alexandre Roubtzoff and André Delacroix, who marked the Tunisian art scene in the 1930s.
He began his career by surveying the archaeological ruins of Carthage and completed his course with the painting classes of the Julian academy between 1900 and 1905. Upon his return to Tunis, he exhibited very quickly in local events such as the salons of Tunisian artists of which he is a founding member.
Among his notable achievements is a large fresco in the choir of the cathedral of Tunis.
Lemare is known for his expressive style and ability to capture the atmosphere of Tunisian scenes, contributing to the richness of the Franco-Tunisian artistic heritage.
