"Huguenot Cross In Carved Wood – Dove Of The Holy Spirit – Folk Art"
Dating: Late 19th – early 20th century Origin: Southern France (probably Languedoc or Cévennes) A Protestant symbol of hope and identity – Huguenot cross carved in wood This Huguenot cross in carved wood, from a popular Protestant craft, incorporates the characteristic elements of this identity symbol: an Occitan cross with eight trilobed points, surmounted by a suspension ring, and completed at the base by a suspended dove, emblem of the Holy Spirit. Born in the context of the religious persecutions of the 17th and 18th centuries, the Huguenot cross established itself from the 19th century onwards as a symbol of fidelity, spiritual resistance and collective memory within French Protestant communities. Unlike the more widespread metal crosses, this carved wooden example reflects a modest but deeply meaningful craftsmanship, probably intended for domestic use: bedside ornament, hanging in a prayer corner or object passed down within the same family. The design is sober, geometric, with ray incisions on each arm. The stylized dove suspended below reinforces the spiritual function of protection and blessing.
