"Curiosa, Erotica - Sculpture - Lustful Monk With Rosary, Erotic - Curiosity - Folk Art"
Dating: First half of the 19th century Origin: France – Massif Central Rare and precious articulated sculpture, representing a male religious figure dressed in a long hooded robe, pectoral cross and rosary carved in bas-relief running along the side. In one piece, the piece was carefully carved from a solid fragment of animal bone, probably of bovine origin, with remarkable attention to detail and delicacy of modeling. At the front, a trapdoor hidden in the bottom of the robe can be lowered. A small string mechanism (replaced in a more recent period but still functional) then allows a sculpted penis to appear, rise and fall, in a single fluid gesture. Unlike other examples of bawdy folk art, this mechanism does not rely on brutal surprise or caricature, but on a discreet and perfectly mastered artisanal finesse. The face, with its gently naive features, expresses an ambiguous, almost ecstatic expression. The contrast between the monk's pious posture, his crossed hands, the cross on his torso and the appearance of the sexual organ is part of a game of double reading: between sacred and flesh, appearance and impulse, faith and transgression. This type of sculpture is part of an ancient curiosa, at once erotic, symbolic and disconcerting, probably made in a private or confidential context. The quality of the engraving, the fluidity of the system, the general state of conservation make this piece a rare and subtle example, much closer to precious sculpture than to peasant satire. Dimensions: 13 cm Condition: very good general condition, very beautiful natural patina, fine cracks related to the material, perfectly functional mechanism.
