But here, the painting that I am offering you is particularly refined! The composition, the delicate palette of colors, the modeling of the faces and its beautiful period setting, form a quality whole. The painter: Trained in Antwerp at the beginning of the 17th century, Gérard Seghers (1591-1651) spent several years in Rome and Spain, probably between 1611 and 1620. A contemporary of Rubens and Van Dyck, he was one of the major artists of the 17th century. Many of his religious compositions adorned the altars of churches in the former Low Countries and Northern France until the Revolution. In Rome, where he lived for a long time, Seghers was particularly influenced by the art of Caravaggio. His first known works are strongly influenced by this, and take the liberty of mixing the strength of chiaroscuro and Caravaggesque naturalness with the plastic canons and subtle chromaticism of Cinquecento models such as Michelangelo, Raphael or Correggio. His pupils included Th. Willeboirts Bosschaert, Peter Franchoys and perhaps Jan Miel. Beautiful original condition. Sold with expert certificate
