Cinnabar is a red lacquer obtained from mercury sulfide, traditionally used in China to create fine decorative objects. The cinnabar carving technique, developed during the Ming Dynasty and refined under the Qing Dynasty, involves applying multiple layers of lacquer, each of which must dry before the next is applied. Once the desired thickness is reached, the artisan hand-carves floral or landscape designs. The blue enamel interior not only protects the surface but also provides a beautiful contrast that enhances the overall aesthetic.
Similar examples, measuring around 16 cm and featuring floral decorations, have been dated to the late 19th century and are highly valued for their artistic finesse and quality of carving. These vases are often mounted on carved wooden stands that further enhance their beauty.
