An ammonite is an extinct marine animal belonging to the squid class. Ammonites lived in the seas of the Paleozoic and Mesozoic Eras (approximately 400 to 66 million years ago). They had a distinctive spiral shell, often preserved in fossil form. Ammonites became extinct during the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period, along with the dinosaurs.
