"Bronze Reliefs "
Spectacular pair of bas-reliefs depicting an oriental couple looking at each other in profile. Patinated and cold-painted bronze. The reliefs are signed "Waagen". Very beautiful detail of the bronze, the figures wear jewelry and a complex headdress. "Athur Waagen" was well known for his oriental figures and his animal bronzes. Of German origin, he was a sculptor and animal artist, a member of the 19th-century movement that specialized in the realistic representation of animals. Famous in his time for his bronze sculptures in an Orientalist style, the artist frequently depicted images associated with North African Muslim culture, the iconography of sport hunting, and themes of historical or popular culture. Born in 1833 in East Prussia, Waagen traveled to France to pursue his artistic career and set up a studio along the Parisian street Cours-de-Vincennes. Waagen exhibited regularly at the Parisian Salons from 1869 to 1887 and died in 1898.
