Emilie Simandl was born in 1880 in Rothenburg. From 1904 to 1908, she studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts, where she implemented her own designs in figurative sculpture and engraved vases in ceramic technique. In 1908, she successfully participated in the Kunstschau Vienna. Emilie Simandl married Franz Schleiss, the founder of "Gmundner Keramik". A long-term collaboration resulted, during which Emilie Schleiss-Simandl created numerous designs for "Gmundner Keramik" and later for the "Verierte Wiener und Gmundner Keramik" (United Vienna and Gmundner Ceramics). She mainly created numerous figures in folk costumes (crinolines with gold caps, etc.), but also other figurative models.
