""hotei", Happy Buddha, Of Happiness Or Laughing, In Bronze."
Buddha "Hotei" from Japan, in bronze. Late 19th century (Edo period), in very good condition. Various representations for this divinity: Hotei, one of the seven Japanese gods of happiness, recognizable by his smiling face, his large earlobes, and an open kimono revealing a generous belly symbolizing generosity, satisfaction and luck. Seated and leaning against a large bag of wealth and good fortune... for some, or used to collect the sadness and misfortune of people, in another version. It is said that he is the only mortal among the Shichifukujin (the seven Gods of Happiness).
