Object description :

"Swiss School - Pair Of Portraits, Late 18th Century - Oils On Canvas - Here: The Woman"
This portrait is part of a pair (see next painting in the gallery). The portraits were painted by the same artist. They cannot be separated.
Both portraits are the same size. The frame of the man's portrait is slightly larger than that of the woman.

The price indicated on this page is for the pair.

Portrait of a woman of quality wearing a substantial lace bonnet and a shawl in the same material. The woman is seated, her hand resting on a table. She has a calm and resolute expression.
One will admire the painter's virtuosity in rendering the lightness and transparency of the muslin and lace, which stand out against the black background.
This painting was undoubtedly painted at the end of the 18th century, as evidenced by the woman's toilette, characteristic of this period. It has been the subject of an old restoration, the label placed on the back attests to this: Eugène Malan was a restorer in Geneva around 1850, he appears on the list of Members of the Society of Arts of this city established in 1851. Malan restored many paintings currently held by the Museum of Art and History of the City of Geneva. This leads us to attribute the portrait we are offering here to a painter of the Swiss school.

The work is in very good condition, with no missing parts. At most, there are slight cracks, usual on a work of this age. It has been thoroughly cleaned. It is offered in a 19th century gilt and stuccoed wooden frame, in good condition. Note that Malan has placed his label on the frame, which attests to its age.
