Circa 1800-1825Lucknow India for fashion in EuropeLong shawl stole in white embroidery on cotton muslin called Chikan Work, originating from the city of Lucknow - Uttar Pradesh in India. This type of very refined embroidery work was exported to Europe by the British East India Companies. This vogue for summer shawls corresponds to the fashion under Napoleon I in France and to the Regency fashion in England. The composition of the design follows the same criteria as the cashmere shawls of India, with here five cashmere palm botehs at the ends, framed by fine borders embroidered in openwork stitch (drawn threads). This stole comes from the collection of Cristina Barreto Lancaster which sold in London in February 2025. It has undergone a meticulous professional restoration carried out in Italy by lining with silk crepeline, stopping and consolidating by hand (see the last two photos). This exemplary restoration is only visible to the naked eye with great care. It is in good condition and generally stable. It is portable and easy to handle. Dimensions: 280 x 87 cm.
