Calogero was born on August 20, 1922, in Catania, Sicily. Self-taught, his parents unable to afford to send him to the School of Fine Arts, he attended the art high school in his hometown. His first exhibitions in 1945, in Sicily and Rome, were a resounding success. He arrived in Paris in 1947 and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. He is best known for his surrealist and genre works. His paintings are dreamlike and visionary.
