These drawings appear to be the result of studies made from plaster casts, as were commonly used in the academic teaching of drawing in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This method, based on the reproduction of sculpted works, aimed to develop in students a sense of proportion, volume and light.
In the first drawing, we can easily recognize the famous bust of François-Marie Arouet, known as Voltaire, sculpted by Jean-Antoine Houdon, whose expressive realism marked neoclassical art. The second portrait represents Jean-Léon Gérôme, after the work of the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, who vividly captured the master's personality.

The drawings show signs of wear, particularly at the edges.
