Karl Anton Hickel (1745-1798) is an Austrian painter who settled in France in 1786 after being the official painter of Joseph II.
He portrayed Queen Marie Antoinette and the Princess de Lamballe (1788).
He also made numerous portraits of the nobility of the southwest where he resided before emigrating to England at the time of the Revolution where he was a popular portraitist.
The British museums keep many of the artist's portraits in their collections. He is the brother of Joseph Hickel painter of the court of Vienna who painted the portrait of the Empress Maria Theresa and her children, including Marie Antoinette, future queen of France.
