This scene of everyday life shows us the calm of life in the provinces. The artist has succeeded in transcribing, through his colorful and lively colors, the lights of the garden as well as the happiness of everyday life.
A pupil of Ingres, Delacroix and Flandrin, he exhibited at the Salon de Paris between 1864 and 1882. A friend of the poets Félibrige, he went on to translate Provencal traditions and comtadines. In 1878 he was appointed director of the Avignon School of Fine Arts, a position he held until his death in 1906. Considered the leader of the New School of Avignon, He will inspire by his teaching in the open air and his virtuosity in the use of colors whose white number of his students, future artists.
The Fondation Louis Vouland in Avignon organized a large retrospective, with more than a hundred works by the artist, from November 2008 to January 2009, a book of which has been published. The work presented is unpublished and is not included in this work. This painting can be compared to the work "The Vegetable Peeler" illustrated on page 139 of the book on the artist.
