The three designers, at the founding of the group, wanted to shake the codes of classicism by designing new shapes to create more accessible furniture. Major pieces of the twentieth century stem from this new and fruitful association. These include the series of storage cabinets for the publisher Minvielle or the armchairs for Steiner. Joseph-André Motte and Michel Mortier are both trained in Applied Arts, Pierre Guariche is a graduate of Arts Décoratifs. All three met while working at the agency of designer Marcel Gascoin. In 1954, they participated in the Salon des Arts Ménagers and realized that they had the common desire to found an association, in particular with the aim of creating a series of furniture desired by the publisher Charles Minvielle. The three designers were awarded numerous prizes at the end of the competition organized by the Technical Center for Wood. The principle was to design practical furniture that easily finds its place in small areas. The Plastic Research Workshop will end in 1957.
