It is essentially known by a narrative of the Gospel according to John (chapter 11) according to which Lazarus, who had died for four days and was placed in a sepulcher, would have come out alive from the tomb on the command of Jesus. Legend has it that after the death of Christ, the Jews embarked him in a boat towards Provence in the company of his sisters Martha and Mary of Bethany as well as several other people. These five witnesses of Christ dwelling at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, he left for his part to evangelize Marseilles, of which he became the first bishop and patron.
