"Johann Jacob Hoch - The Exaltation Of The Cross"
Johann Jacob HOCH Mainz, 1750 - 1829 Pencil 33 x 21 cm (50 x 40,5 cm with the frame) Signed and dated lower left "Johann Jacob Hoch / 13 July 1778" Johann Jacob Hoch is a German painter and draftsman. Born in a family of painters from Mainz, he trained in Vienna between 1778 and 1783. He lived in Paris in 1783. He is known for the detailed or miniaturist character of his works, characteristic of the German draftsmen of the last third of the 18th century.
This is undoubtedly a decor project (atmospheric perspective and more sketched distant parts) with the exaltation of the Cross as a subject, a pretext for the performance of a multitude of skits on the life of the great Christian saints.
