Large brown enamelled stoneware jar, ovoid, wide opening. Yellow relief decoration of two dragoons surrounding the sacred pearl, vegetable tracery, a circular band patterned with "greek" and roped circles. glazed interior of turquoise color.
The decor of this jar is inspired by ancient Chinese dragon jars.

Martaban jars were used to store food and water in homes and on boats. They were also used to pack precious Chinese porcelain for export.
