Jacob blessing Menachea and Ephraim Jacob is preparing to bless the two children of Joseph who are both born in Egypt in foreign land, so they are the first children born in exile, Menache is the eldest, Ephraim the youngest. Blessing pronounced nowadays by the parents every Friday evening, and every year before Yom Kippur (may eternal do that you are in the image of Ephraim and Menaché). Our painting depicts Jacob preparing to bless the children of Joseph, Menachea is the eldest Ephraim the youngest, but Jacob will cross his hands and his right hand which is in principle reserved for the birthright, bless Ephraim and therefore inverted the order of the blessing, in front of his son Joseph who will try to prevent it and restore the order of the siblings.
