Object description :

"Joseph Benoit Suvee, Large Drawing Eighteenth On Gray / Blue Paper Portrait Of Woman"
IMPORTANT ANCIENT DRAWING OF THE EIGHTEENTH FIGURING A BEAUTIFUL FEMALE PROFILE IN PROFILE IN THE TASTE OF JEAN BAPTISTE GREUSE ** NEOCLASSIVE SCHOOL OF THE Eighteenth CENTURY ** (Attributable to Joseph-Benoît Suvée (Bruges 1743- Rome 1807) Also to be compared to the work of François -André Vincent (Paris 1746-Paris 1816) Dimensions: Sheet: 51.5x38.5 / A view of the old assembly: 45x33cm Work with black chalk and heightened blood and white chalk on gray-bluish laid paper ( A watermark is to be observed in transparency, see photo on this subject.) To announce a transverse fold median and various small wrinkles and / or folds, a small hole to day in a place (You will look at the picture of the back of the sheet which is explicit on this subject) but seen from the motive side we hardly notice these minor faults, nothing brings a real prejudice to this beautiful drawing of the XVIIIth century. It does not bear any signature or annotation. After some brief researches as company with the help of a person knowledgeable in the matter I could identify a print in the manner of the pencil of Jean-François Janinet, executed after a drawing of Joseph-Benoît Suvée, very close to our drawing, (A copy of this print is in the Museum of the City of Paris, another was sold by Christie's in October 2007). Our design nevertheless presents some obvious differences due to the technique of execution. In view of this information collected, our drawing could be an original drawing by Joseph-Benoît Suvée. The texture of the paper perfectly corroborates the era of activity of the artist, personally I could not identify the watermark it presents; if a very competent person could enlighten me about it, I would really appreciate it). (I attached to this announcement the photo of the stamp reference). (It will be necessary to show this drawing of visu to a qualified expert to confirm a real attribution). JOSEPH-BENOIT SUVÉE (1743-1807) (SOURCE ARTHENA). SOPHIE JOIN-LAMBERT AND ANNE LECLAIR Formed in Bruges, Suvée perfected herself in Paris in Bachelier's studio. In 1771, he was awarded the Grand Prix of the Academy, ahead of David who will keep a persistent grudge. In Rome, the boarder of the Académie de France shows a lively curiosity for ancient sites. He made many drawings, some of which, admirable, reveal one of the most talented draftsmen of his generation. In 1779, back in Paris, he was received at the Royal Academy. He will now play a leading role. The paintings he exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1779 to 1796 testify to an unreserved adherence to neoclassicism. Some works are very popular, be they paintings of national history, ancient history or religious paintings. At the same time, he paints many portraits with moving realism, the most famous being those of his companions in misfortune held with him during the Terror in the prison of Saint-Lazare, especially that of the poet André Chénier. In 1801, Suvée took the direction of the Académie de France in Rome. It is under his leadership that a new generation of artists, including Ingres, completes his training. Outstanding draftsman, painter and innovator, recognized pedagogue, Suvée, European artist between Bruges, Paris and Rome, fully belongs to the world of Enlightenment. A note that the frame is recent, the marie-louise pretty but rather artisanal character.
