Jules Coignet (1789-1860) Animated landscape: Mountain lake in the Swiss Alps at the cottage, cows and boat Pastel on paper Signed lower left 20 cm x 28 cm Framed gilt wood decorated with a frieze of pearls 38 cm x 50 cm Biography Jules Coignet: Student of Jean-Victor Bertin, he adopted the predilection of his master for landscape painting. He asserted his own artistic sensibility by leaving the studio to paint from nature in a picturesque style, more visual and less stilted than the classic or romantic way of his predecessors. He is the author of a large number of paintings depicting views and landscapes painted during his many travels in the Tyrol and the country of Baden, Switzerland, Italy and Sicily, Egypt and Lebanon in the East. as well as in several provinces of France, notably Brittany and the Isère valley. Accustomed to the Salon, which he participated regularly, he was rewarded with a gold medal in 1824. The art critic Auguste Jal particularly appreciated the oils exhibited by Coignet at the Salon of 1831. He also obtained a medal of money at the Lille Exhibition. As an institutional testimony of recognition of his artistic reputation, he was appointed Knight of the Legion of Honor on April 30, 1836. Author of numerous paintings, pastel drawings and watercolors, Jules Coignet also worked as a portraitist. As a lithographer, he has also engraved and published several series of prints of his composition as well as other artists. In 1834 and 1845, he organized two public sales of his production, much appreciated by art lovers. After his death, his studio floor was dispersed in public auction on April 8, 1861.
