Object description :

"Auguste Carli (1868-1930) Bronze Sculpture Siot Foundry"
Auguste Carli (1868-1930) Bronze sculpture with dark patina. Signed on the base A Carli and stamp Siot casting Lost wax. Perfect condition Auguste Carli (1868 -1930), elder brother of the sculptor François Carli, student of the sculptor Émile Aldebert, wins in 1890 the competition of the School of the fine arts of Marseilles, which is worth to him a purse to go to the School of Fine Arts in Paris to complete his training in the studio of Jules Cavelier. In 1896 he won the second prize in Rome while his compatriot Constant-Ambroise Roux triumphed, which closed certain Parisian perspectives. He received his first order from the State on January 30, 1900 for two children playing figures, for the lintels of the side doors of the central porch of the Grand Palais in Paris. He settled in Marseille and worked on various projects such as the stairs at the Saint-Charles train station or the Caisse d'épargne. For the Caisse d'Epargne hotel in Marseille, he sculpts a high relief located at the intersection of the Place Estrangin and Cours Pierre Puget: the allegory of L'Épargne is represented by a largely draped woman, advancing a booklet in hand to a blacksmith who hands him a purse containing his savings; in the background are a plowman and a sower, while in the bottom right an elderly couple, hand in hand, enjoying the benefits of foresight. He directed several religious works including The struggle of Jacob and the Angel and Christ and St. Veronica. This last sculpture, shown on the occasion of the 1906 Colonial Exhibition, is characterized by the expressions of pain marking the face of Christ and the suffering of Saint Véronique. Christ and Saint Veronica is located inside the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Marseille. Henriette Albrand, daughter of the shipowner Joseph Étienne, ordered in 1904 to Auguste Carli a monumental fountain to celebrate the memory of his father. This fountain of the Triumph of Amphitrite was inaugurated in 1906 on the place Joseph Étienne in Marseille. An imposing pedestal supports the statue of Amphitrite, the left arm stretched out towards the city, with at its feet a triton blowing in a conch. The pedestal, which has four rostrums decorated with ram's heads, is surmounted by a cartouche on which are engraved the names of the ships belonging to the shipowner Joseph Étienne: Cedar, Clarisse Louise, Gull and Nicolas Étienne Jeune. His friendships for Radical-Socialist circles earned him the commission of the Monument to Senator Victor Leydet (1910) in Aix-en-Provence, the Monument to Camille Pelletan in Salon-de-Provence (1922), and the Monument to Paul Peytral ( 1926) at Borély Park in Marseille.
