Object description :

"14th C. German Limewood Figure Of St Peter"
Rare sculpture of the last quarter of the14th century depicting St Peter standing holding the book of the Gospels. He is dressed in a coat that forms typical draperies of the fourteenth century: the folds in V on the front and the falls on the sides. With tonsured head, meditative gaze and downcast eyes, St Pierre wears a mustache and a beard with wavy locks carefully cut and symmetrical. The locks of her hair are rolled up on themselves. The delicately carved long finger hand carries the Gospel. Our statue probably belonged to an altarpiece presenting the twelve apostles in the image of the altarpiece of the Church of the Holy Apostles in Cologne (linden, around 1330, height around 45 cm), or the altarpiece of Herrnburger around 1400, Lübeck. Its place of execution is probably in the Middle Rhine region, around Cologne, a flourishing city in the 14th century, where and around which many sculpture workshops were active to fill the growing demand of the clergy and the noble statues and statuettes are also intended for worship in the private setting. Cologne and Paris had strong links thanks to commercial exchanges, but also artistic. Thus the draperies of our statue are inspired by the statuary of Île de France, while the face, the treatment of the curls reveals a Germanic style.
Beautiful quality of execution.
