"Large Torchiere Lamp By F. Barbedienne"
Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) important pair of candelabra lamps with patinated bronze caryatids surmounted by a top of capitals in gilded bronze decorated with a lampshade in frosted glass representing a flame, the whole rests on molded pyramidal bases carved in cherry marble richly underlined with ornaments in gilded bronze. Work of very beautiful authentic quality XIXth circa late Napoleon III signed on the back F. BARBEDIENNE and each bearing the seal of Achille Collas founder. Ferdinand Barbedienne is one of the most famous bronziers of the nineteenth century, cast iron quality and beautiful patina make his fame, he accomplished many works preserved in European museums, it is likely that our caryatids are strictly inspired by those who support the rostrum musicians in the Louvre in "the room of caryatids" which owes its name to the four female figures carved by Jean Goujon in 1550, this room is on the ground floor of the wing built in the style of the Renaissance by Pierre Lescot in the 16th century.
