Object description :

"Faunesse Bronze Patina, Florence, Late Seventeenth Century"
  • Faune
  • Brown-patina bronze
  • after Pietro Tacca (Carrara 1577-Florence 1640)
  • Florence, late 17th century
  • Very good condition
  • Faume female bronze after Pietro Tacca. The right arm raised in the hair. Bronze with brown patina from the late 17th-early 18th century. Fixed on a base of colored marbles. (Small wear patina and small chips on the base).
    • The subject is after, in an upright position, the engraving "Venus and the Satyr" by Agostino Carracci, around 1590-1595 (Bohlin, 1979, n ° 189). We find this attitude in an earlier bronze, around 1584, "The Sleeping Nymph" by Giambologna, many copies of which will be drawn by the artist's followers, Susini and the Tacca's family. This erotic subject will also inspire painters of the next generation, Poussin and Claude Mellan, whose "The mousetrap" will be a very personal interpretation of the subject. Our bronze attributed to Pietro Tacca, successor of Giambologna, will also be castedby his son Ferdinando. The quality of the cast, the repair and the chasing as well as the patina makethis bronze a realization from the end of the 17th century.
