Object description :

"Holy Family, Intarsia Panel From Eger / Cheb"
Intarsia panel showing the Holy Family, Eger / Cheb workshops, maybe JN Haberstumpf.

Intarsia is a technique consisting of inlaid pieces of wood on a softwood background, considered the ancestor of the marquetry.

The workshops of Eger, or Cheb in modern Czech republic, were particularly famous in the 17th and 18th centuries for their intarsia production.

Our panel representing the Holy Family at rest during the flight to Egypt can be compared to the work of Johann-Nicolaus Haberstumpf, in the first third of the eighteenth. The panel was mounted on a cabinet or a box, as shown by the remains of marbled paper adorning the reverse, typical of this production.

Accidents and lacks, especially to the hairs of the Child. Some restorations.
