Object description :

"Pair Of Candlesticks By Claude Galle, Model Of The Palace Of Compiegne"
Beautiful Empire pair of candlesticks in gilt copper.
You will recognize the palmettes on the base, which we find on other models created by Claude Galle.
The octagonal barrel in the shape of quiver with cut sides is surmounted by three heads of Diane capped with the crescent of Moon. The presence of Diana, to ensure the light once Apollo disappeared, has all its meaning on torches.
This model was designed and made by Claude Galle in 1808 for the Empress Josephine's Bedroom at the Palais de Compiègne. As with any Crown order, this model was made in very limited numbers and reserved for the elite of the time. The chiselling quality is also much more worked than on the "commercial" models of Galle.
