Cornelis Ary Renan (1857-1900) Charming oil on cardboard depicting the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and Santa Fosca Church on the island of Torcello opposite Venice. Signature lower left "A Renan" and located "Torcello September 28, 1880". An album of drawings and travel souvenirs in the Museum of Romantic Life features Italian views including views of Torcello by Ary Renan. Ary Renan is the son of the historian Ernest Renan, the grandson of the painter Henry Scheffer and the grand-nephew of the romantic painter Ary Scheffer. A student of Jules-Elie Delaunay and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he is one of Gustave Moreau's closest friends.
