Large oil painting on canvas signed lower right Raymond Desvarreux (1876-1961) French school showing a romantic composition in the style of the 1st Empire located in a park featuring a dandy wearing a cocked hat decorated with a cockade Reading the newspaper to an elegant young woman sitting on a chair, they are surrounded by an aside formed by two other couples. Beautiful period frame in carved wood with gold leaf animated by a Louis XVI style molding. Very good condition. Dimensions: 70 cm X 60 cm Raymond Desvarreux (1876-1961) is the son of the American painter James Desvarreux-Larpenteur, he was a student of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Jean Baptiste Detaille. He painted landscapes, horses and hunting scenes like his father, he exhibited in the Paris Salon large compositions celebrating the campaigns of the Revolution and the Empire and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. He participated in the panorama of the Battle of Waterloo under the direction of Louis Dumoulin in 1911-1912, and obtained a gold medal at the Salon of 1913.It is a member of the Society of Military Painters late 1913, approved by the Musée de l Army in early December 1914 and appointed painter of the Ministry of War in February 1915. Through his work for the Museum of the Army, Raymond Desvarreux appears as a talented artist, honest and scrupulous, both portraitist, painter of horses and landscape.
