Pair of cassolettes in Scagliola imitating lapis lazuli of octagonal baluster shape with cylindrical pedestal. Garnished with a gilt bronze flame in the upper part and two handles with acanthus leaves, a gadrooned cup, all on a square base. Scagliola is a production technique imitating marble. It is a composite substance based on selenite (glue and natural pigments imitating marble and hard stones). The material can be veined with applied colors or tinted in the mass. It is polished with linseed oil, then waxed. This technique was very fashionable as early as the 17th century in Italy. Visible hair on a cassolette.
