Watercolor under glass and framed signed lower right Douglas MacDiarmind and appearing three women back from the market. Excellent condition. Dimensions at sight of the watercolor 29,5x23 cm. Frame dimensions 44x36 cm. Born in New Zealand in 1922 expatriate artist Douglas MacDiarmid was extremely involved in the key art movements of the twentieth century. Trained at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch he has been living in Paris since the 1940s. During this period, the French school has been internationally pre-eminent. Associated at the beginning of his career with Christchurch's avant-garde "group" his sense of color can be attributed to the Evelyn page's teaching and MacDiarmid's admiration for Matisse.Art MacDiarmid is held in public collections of New Zeeland, including the Alexander Turnbull Library, BNZ Collection, Robert Hocken Library, Robert McDougall Art Gallery, University of Victoria and Te Papa Tongarewa: Museum of New Zealand. He has exhibited in New Zealand since 1950 his exhibition at the Hitchings Gallery Helen in Wellington and, in 1968, the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council organized a retrospective of her work in this city.Her art was also exhibited in Paris, Athens, Casablanca and London.In 2002, it was the subject of a biography written by a historian of French art.
