Notre Dame de Paris, by Victor Hugo, was published in 1831. This book quickly became very popular and Esmeralda's character inspired many artists. Esmeralda was very in love with the handsome Captain of the Guard Phoebus, a deceitful man who did not like her. She could not see that behind the ugliness of Quasimodo hid a pure heart that loved her.
