He traveled for years through the High Atlas, sharing bread and salt with herders and shepherds and their bitter lives, collecting their tales, their traditions and dramatic confidences. Written in 1928-29, my observations are likely to offer only a retrospective interest especially in the difficult circumstances we live and in the agonizing uncertainty of tomorrow ... But they are still such that I would have but now, with hindsight, now that Morocco is unified as a whole, I realize that I have portrayed in my stories not the Sons of Shadow but the Last Sons of 'Shadow". This book is a hymn to the beauty of the Middle Atlas and its inhabitants. The sympathy of its author to the cause of the Berber resistance breaks with the works of the time. "
