"Pair Of Bronze Candlesticks After Just Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750)"
Pair of Candlesticks after Just Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750) engraved bronze patina gold and patina with rich decor decorated with children entwined around a casse rocaille enlivened resting on a shredded base with windings and staples foliage . Good condition, beautiful gilding, size 23 cm high. The model of these flambeaux is due to the silversmith-ornamentist Just Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750) according to its drawing Candlestick of silver sculpture invented by J.Meissonnier Architect in 1728, fig. 10 and 12 (see H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, Vol I, Fig. 2.1.1, page 102). A comparable pair of torches is kept in the Louvre Museum (donated by Mr. and Mrs. René Grog-Carven inv.OA10530), is illustrated in D.Alcouffe, A.Dion-Tenenbaum, G.Mabille, Bronzes d'Ameublement du Louvre, Editions Faton, Dijon, 2004, p. 59. Another pair can be found in the Wallace collection in London (FJB Watson Wallace Catalogs Collection, 1956, 21 fig 78-79). In his book Watson also mentions another pair in the San Donato collection (sold in Paris on April 21, 1870, lot 1599) which was found in the collection of Wendell Cherry (sale Sotheby's New York, May 20, 1994, lot 34) . In addition a similar pair from the collection of Barons Nathaniel and Alphonse de Rothschild, was then part of the collection Akram Ojjeh (see Sotheby's Monaco, 25-26 June 1979, lot 168). More recently, a pair dating from around 1830 was sold (£ 4,750) by Christie's London, the Exceptional Sale, December 10, 2009 Lot 503
